Back Pain and the Alexander Technique

Our Approach to Back Discomfort

Rather than treating symptoms directly, our approach focuses on addressing one of the common underlying factors: downward pressure caused by poor postural tone in the body’s primary support system. We do not use massage, manipulation, or prescribe stretching or strengthening exercises — these are often unnecessary when excess tension is addressed at its source.
Improvements arise naturally as students learn to:
  • Let go of habitual, unnecessary tension
  • Work in harmony with the body’s natural upward support and balance mechanisms
This process often leads to a reduction in strain and a lighter, more supported experience of movement.
What the press say

Daily Telegraph:
  • "Alexander Technique: the great curer of back pain"
  • "Alexander posture technique 'most effective at reducing back pain'"
The Guardian:
  • "Alexander technique 'does ease back pain'"
The Mirror
  • "Alexander Technique can reduce back pain by a staggering 85%"
British Medical Journal
  • "A series of 24 lessons in the Alexander technique taught by registered teachers provides long term benefits for patients with chronic or recurrent low back pain"

One-to-one AT lessons are hands-on sessions involving extremely gentle touch - particularly around the back of the head, neck and shoulders. Tensions in these areas affect the whole body and similarly letting go of tensions here relieves pressure right through the whole body.

What people have said about Alexander lessons

“The Alexander Technique helped a long-standing back problem and to get a good night’s sleep after many years of tossing and turning.”
Paul Newman
Actor

"John is patient, equanimous and will not collude with dysfunctional patterns. He keeps coming back to using direction and inhibition to help you get back into your own skin in the moment. I cannot praise his ability to teach the intangible highly enough. I owe him a great deal, not only am I free from pain - I have learnt to lead a more nourishing and full life as a result of my work with him."
