Learning the Alexander Technique

What Is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a practical method for becoming more aware of how you move and hold yourself. It helps you recognize and change habits that may cause unnecessary tension, promoting ease and balance in everyday activities.
“John Hunter gave me lessons for 2 years while I was studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. I experienced 'bodymindness' thanks to him, and it really helped me to learn to relax my body; to relate my mind with my body.”
Cécile Marichal
Professor of Harp, Belgium
How Do You Learn It?
The most effective way to learn the Alexander Technique is through a series of one-to-one lessons with a qualified teacher. These sessions involve gentle guidance and verbal instruction to help you become more aware of your movement patterns and develop new, more beneficial habits.
“I got to know John at the residential course in Spain, 2010. For me it was a wonderful and perceptive time: in this beautiful environment, I was able to really get deeply into the Alexander Technique, to enrich my 'body-experience'.”
Isis-Maria Henn
Violinist, Germany
What to Expect in a Lesson
In a typical lesson, you'll engage in simple movements such as sitting, standing, and walking, with the teacher providing hands-on guidance and verbal cues. The focus is on increasing your awareness and allowing for more natural, effortless movement.
“The soft and kind touch of teachers when they guide us, gave me the sensation that I am sustained and make me feel much more safety, stability, depth and self-awareness.”
Cristina Gabriela Buburuz
Actress, Romania
Benefits of the Technique
Students often report a range of benefits from practicing the Alexander Technique, including:
  • Improved posture and coordination
  • Enhanced performance in music, acting, and other activities
  • Increased sense of calm and well-being
  • Greater ease and freedom of movement
The ability to grasp how the technique operates at a physical, psychological and spiritual level and transfer this knowing through your teaching is a gift John Hunter has that I have never found in any other Alexander Technique teacher. You would be privileged to work with him."
